The challenge

Cleaning the interior and exterior roof of tank 107 of the Cepsa Refinery Gibraltar-San Roque facilities in San Roque, recovering the maximum amount of crude oil and minimising the risks within the confined space for DOMINION employees with the tank out of service for the shortest possible time.

The manual cleaning of the interior and outside top part of the tank increases the risks for DOMINION's team of industrial cleaning operators, as well as the amount of waste resulting from the cleaning. DOMINION offered CEPSA to carry out the project in three different stages, managed by a multidisciplinary technical team with extensive experience in each area. In this way, and using innovative technology, the process time was reduced by half and the safety risks were minimised.

Results

The client recovered a total of 1,300 cubic metres of crude oil and separated a total of 200 cubic metres of solids, achieving savings for the customer through the final management of the recovered crude oil in an authorised landfill, thereby reducing the environmental impact, and the return of the crude oil for processing, with the consequent savings in raw materials.
